When Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492, the world seemed to be vast, endless and unknown. The known world was small, and crossing the Atlantic was fraught with uncertainty, fear and excitement.

Fast forward to the age of satellite technology and space exploration, and our planet feels much smaller and more accessible place. We can travel across continents in just a few hours, making even the farthest places within reach in less than a day.

This shrinking of our world has brought many benefits, but it also comes with a profound realisation: our planet is finite, and its resources are not unlimited.

According to Global Footprint Network, throughout the human history, we have used nature’s resources to build cities and roads, to provide food and create products, and to release carbon dioxide at a rate that was well within Earth’s scope. By the early 1970s, that critical threshold had been crossed: human consumption began outstripping what the planet could reproduce and humanity’s demand for resources is now equivalent to that of more than 1.7 the Earth’s.
